Trouble is, the voice is still the same scratchy, little-girl voice as before, and the tunes, while catchy, are still the same teenage-targeted, forgettable tunes as before. Heck, the girl won't even use her full name, still clinging on to the Mel C moniker (it's Melanie Chisholm, if you must know). Solo album or not, this is still the same Spice Girls album dressed up in slightly more sophisticated hues...

...Senate's chance to approve the nuclear test-ban treaty--already ratified by 26 nations--was a test of the "leadership" the U.S. likes to talk about. The nation failed that test miserably and damaged its credibility around the world. But what the heck. Congressional Republicans can also be proud of the U.S.'s not paying its U.N. bills, of foisting the Ken Starr fiasco upon the nation and of resisting gun-control measures so that those N.R.A. contributions can keep coming in. ...consumers and such severely critized campaigns as the cartoonish Joe Camel, are now doubling their attempts to seduce the next age segment, young adults. A suggestion: Perhaps antismoking campaigns should be retooled to address kids in high school or just heading off to college. Otherwise it could be one heck of a deadly generation...
