...audacious wall decoration: a large photograph of a broadly smiling Ronald Reagan, who had challenged Nixon for the 1968 G.O.P. nomination. Moreover, the occupant of the office, Nixon's director of the Office of Management and Budget, often proudly pointed to both Reagan's grin and the handwritten inscription under it: "The smile is for real, thanks to you. In friendship and warm regards, Ron." Said the OMB boss to one visitor: "Now, there is a man who really knows how to cut budgets...
...intriguing glimpse of Polish attitudes was provided last week by the French magazine Paris Match, which published the results of an unusual public opinion poll taken inside Poland. Working with handwritten questionnaires, eight pollsters from Public S.A., a French firm, clandestinely queried a representative sample of 500 Poles. Most of the respondents were deeply dissatisfied with the quality of their Eves: 86% said their purchasing power was insufficient, and 69% found the government unresponsive. His hang...

We were supposed to meet secretly in Pushkin Square, where I would palm my copy to her. The day of our rendezvous I looked at my handwritten report (it was thought wise to leave my portable typewriter at home) and found it indecipherable even to my own eyes. I telephoned the TIME office on Kutuzovsky Prospekt and, with a handkerchief over the mouthpiece, asked if I could come over and type my story up before going off to Pushkin...
...week's end the White House reversed itself and admitted that one cable had been given to Billy. Presidential Press Secretary Jody Powell released a copy of a State Department message that bore a handwritten note from Jimmy praising Billy for his abstemious behavior in Libya. Powell lamely explained that everyone at the White House had forgotten about the annotated cable, which had been mailed to Billy on Oct. 11, 1978, until Billy's lawyers turned up a copy...
