...works in the ICA show reveal the formal similarities of much Dadaist graphic art to contemporary examples. The Dadaists experimented with the nature of graphic communication, mixing typefaces and altering size and scale. Ernst's poster "Dada Zeigt!" (Dada Wins!) uses assorted lettering with unrelated symbols--a rope, a bed, a cow, a housewife. The asymmetric anarchic quality of such compositions also characterizes contemporary New Wave graphics. This aesthetic, which has sprung up alongside of punk music and fashion, is characterized by the juxtaposition of disparate forms, symbols and lettering in designs that often are consciously crooked, random and askew...
...Talking Heads album is called Remain In Light. There's a nice computer graphic on the back, showing Russian warplanes over a mountain range. You can tell that the original members of the band--Byrne, guitarist and keyboard player Jerry Harrison (late of Harvard), Bassist Tina Weymouth and Drummer Chris Frantz--met in art school. They're joined on this album by Adrian Belew, Jose Rossy, Jon Hassel, Nona Hendryx and the omnipresent Eno. Robert Palmer is among the many given credit for percussion but he probably just hit a bottle with a spoon on one song...
Smaller firms that lack large research departments often use desktop computers to turn a stack of complex statistics into easy-to-read charts. Rosen Research, a Manhattan firm that studies the electronics industry, recently used its Apple II personal computer for such a job. The cost: 40? for a graphic illustration, compared with $80 each when prepared by a professional designer...
...evening wound down to the last few computer-generated graphic bumps and grinds, NBC's fast draw was drawing as much comment in certain quarters as the election itself. CBS News' Bill Leonard insisted, while sipping a Coke, that NBC's cannonball finish was "small beer." He added: "We all knew it was going to be a landslide. If one horse is a foot from the finish line and all the others have fallen down, calling the race then or waiting until he finishes is a technicality, perhaps. Did CBS tell you Carter was winning?" San Francisco...
...decades, Jean-Luc Godard has been cinema's master of collage. His films assemble scraps of dust-jacket wisdom, revolutionary rhetoric, sexual aggression, the music and the language of the streets, images from books, TV, magazines and billboards, forming a mosaic that melds the graphic wit of a Braque guitar with the anarchic intensity of a kidnaper's ransom note. In Every Man for Himself, the first Godard film to be distributed in the U.S. since 1972, he has tried to make an accessible movie while still speaking in his steely, ironic voice. But Godard will...
