Director Andrzej Wajda displays more concern with people than ideas, with the emotions of his heroes than with the symbols of any system. When Munch died in 1944, he left the majority of his life's work, 1,200 paintings, 3,000 drawings and 12,000 graphic works, to the municipality of Oslo, his native city. All of these works are now a part of the Oslo Municipal Art Collection, and are to be housed in a separate building to be known as the Munch Museum.
