Usage:

SWITCH TO A "DIET COLA." More formally, adopt a formula for cost of living allowances that increases pensions less rapidly than the consumer price index rises. Inflation has subsided so drastically as to drain the urgency from this proposal. Also, because of changes in the way it is calculated, the CPI no longer overstates inflation by a bit more than one percentage point, as a government panel of economists thought it did two or three years ago. But some overestimation probably remains, and could cause trouble in the hardly impossible event that price increases speed up once more...

...throaty voice and a clever little ditty of a rap, and sprinkle in explicit sexual references here and there, and you've got a number one hit. Yet Eric Bent, with his second solo album A Day in the Life, is somehow able to manipulate this basic formula and actually come up with something rather new. You've got the sampling going on--a catchy rendition of the nursery-school rhyme "Georgy-Porgy" is repeated again, and again (and again . . .) in the second track of the same name. On the drama front, Chicago Hope's Peter Berg, who made his film directorial debut with last winter...

...drowned out by the overpowering instrumental back-up, but some songs are definitely worth a listen. The title song is refreshing, an almost ethereal experience spotted with spurts of dissonance that reflect the brutal realities apparent in much of the music. Listening further, though, you'll realize the same formula is repeated in every song--a few bars of the band, and within seconds, a mellow, whiny voice that enters and builds up to a shrill, screaming climax before dipping back into eerie sounds. The repetition made me wonder if I had listened to all eleven songs, or the same...
