...view of the doomsayers, time is fast running out for this plundered planet. By the turn of the century, they argue, its once plentiful resources will be nearing exhaustion. That gloomy forecast has been increasingly disputed of late, and it takes another knock in a report soon to be published by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs. After three years of analysis, a team of economists headed by Nobel Prizewinner Wassily Leontief has concluded that world resources can support a growing population well into the 21st century. Global abundance will also permit higher standards of living without...

...come in. For the second straight season the Red Sox have demonstrated the uncertainties in sport. In that endless summer of 1975, when even the Fenway pigeons seemed to sing, the Bosox defied the critics who had put them behind Baltimore and New York in their division, who had forecast the A's in three, and the Big Red Machine to roll in four...

...hurricane that would more than solve his cub reporter's problem arrived without prehistory: no forecast, no cute nickname. Resurrecting names and places from old clippings, conducting new interviews with survivors, Allen has, in effect, retracked the storm. There is the occasionally odd and saving incident. In New Jersey, 60 colonies of beavers manned their dams in Palisades Park and, in the process of saving themselves, kept down the flooding of 42,000 acres of nearby land and highways. But mostly Allen's story is a sequence of unremitting havoc...

...most prophets were decidedly gloomier. Several foresaw an end of the American presidency, perhaps by the year 2025. Tarot Card Reader Johanna Okovic predicted an earthquake in New York City in 1978 and a war between 2011 and 2016. Astrologer Leah O'Leary, Michael's wife, forecast a "naval conflict" in 1979, floods on both the East and West coasts and a "nuclear mishap...

Three months ago, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's economists predicted that retail prices of food would rise only slightly this year. Last week they backed up that welcome forecast. According to the department's spring "crop production" report for 1976, the nation's corn crop will reach a record 6.55 billion bu. this year. Since corn is a key livestock feed, its abundance should help to hold down the price of meat. An equally important crop will do almost as well: the wheat harvest should come in at a near record 2.04 billion bu. This torrent...
