...other end of the spectrum are therapies that aim directly at fat tissue. Scientists at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston are trying to starve fat cells by attacking proteins embedded in the blood vessels that feed those cells. In experiments on obese mice, their excess fat melted away in a matter of weeks. Not only did this strategy eliminate fat tissue--the animals lost 30% of their body weight--but mice that were dangerously overweight quickly regained their health. In fact, early signs of diabetes reversed, fat no longer accumulated in the liver, and cholesterol and glucose levels dropped...
...more than would have been expected from weight loss alone. There is also evidence that patients on rimonabant may become more sensitive to the action of insulin, which can halt the progression from prediabetes to diabetes. "In addition to reducing food intake, rimonabant may have an effect on fat cells themselves," says Dr. Jean-Pierre Despres of Laval University in Montreal, who is leading one of the drug's clinical trials. "That's clearly exciting...
Nobody wants his kid to be fat. Aside from the serious health issues, there's the gym-class issue, the last-one-picked-for-the-team issue, the clothes-shopping issue and, alas, the meanness issue. Being an overweight kid is often painful. Other kids can be cruel; even teachers can be biased. And, let's face it, a blubbery kid is a bad reflection on the parent. It suggests too much junk food in the pantry, too much time in front of the TV and other failures of parental oversight. For a parent who also carries too many pounds...
Probably the most unexpected result is that there is no consensus about the best way to lose weight. Half the registrants shed the pounds on their own; the other half enrolled in a program or went to a nutritionist. Some participants emphasized protein, others a low-fat diet. But most chose some combination of limiting what they ate and increasing their level of physical activity...
After reaching their goal, most long-term losers followed a single general strategy toward nutrition: limiting the calories and to a lesser extent the amount of fat in their diet. (It will be interesting to see if this observation continues to hold as high-protein diets become more popular.) That doesn't mean that they necessarily count each calorie or weigh every portion, but they often started by looking up the calorie content of their favorite foods. "I was surprised at how calories can sneak up on you," says Gregg Fields, 44, a college professor in Delray Beach...
