...three crews got good starts, but in a few strokes the Weld was seen to be drawing ahead. The first half-mile was covered in remarkably fast time. At the bridge the Weld had gained considerably and were leading the Millstreams by a length of open water, the B. A. A. bringing up the rear three lengths behind. All the crews were rowing in fine form at this point, the Weld especially maintaining a long, even stroke at 38 and rowing in perfect union. This order was maintained until within a quarter of a mile from the finish, when...

...first place, fast as the English stroke may be, and well qualified as Mr. Lehmann may be to teach it, it is practically an impossibility for any oarsmen to make a very radical change in their system of rowing and master all the fine points of a new stroke all in one year. The Harvard crew is a fairly strong one physically, and we believe the rowing methods in vogue at Cambridge and Oxford to be the best adapted to eight-oared crews. ...Weld intermediate crew won a splendid victory over the strong B. A. A. eight yesterday in a mile and a half race over the regular course, in the fast time of 8m. 4s. The result was somewhat unlooked for, as the B. A. A. crew were regarded as exceptionally fast, three of their men having rowed in the 'Varsity boat at Poughkeepsie last year. They recently defeated the intermediates over the same course and won a hard race from the Millstreams, one of the fastest New England eights, last Saturday. The conditions were fairly good, as there was little tide...
