...disproportionate propensity for missing teeth. At first, these are gross and funny, but eventually become just gross. Amazingly, Bates and Sandler manage to keep the unoriginal material quite hilarious; but even Sandler's comedic appeal cannot sustain the mindless Foxworthy humor. Fortunately, he does get some help from Fairuza Balk as Bobby's horny, buck-toothed and violent, but nonetheless sweet, ex-convict girlfriend. She demonstrates her love for Bobby by redesigning his riding lawnmower into a high-speed vehicle, romantically stealing Lawrence Taylor's Corvette and seductively gnawing on barbecued squirrel...
...about a single mom named Nora (Brooke Adams), living in a trailer park in a small New Mexico town, working as a waitress in a roadside restaurant, at once harried and patient (and wonderfully authentic) as she tries to raise two daughters. The younger of them, Shade (Fairuza Balk), narrates the story of a crucial few months in their lives. She has a busy, dreamy mind. She may moon over the romantic fictions shown at a little Hispanic theater and end up falling for the Latino boy who works as its projectionist. But she's also up and doing -- looking...
...script is almost clinically clear about why the Marquise de Merteuil (Annette Bening) and the Vicomte de Valmont (Colin Firth) embark on a campaign to debauch a 15-year-old virgin, Cecile de Volanges (Fairuza Balk). The older woman is gripped by temporary insanity because she loves the man who intends to marry the adolescent. The vicomte too has his excuses. He is possessed by a passionate nature, the ill effects of which, it is implied, are also temporary. Give the kid some time, and he will probably turn out to be an admirable citizen. Indeed, his second amorous campaign...
...Emerald City as Dorothy (Fairuza Balk) rediscovers it is about as wondrous as East Berlin in a brownout. Seems that the Nome King, who is a talking rock (stonily played by Nicol Williamson), has trashed the place and turned its inhabitants into boulders for good measure. Presiding over the ruins is, of course, a wicked witch (Jean Marsh), who lacks a broomstick but has several dozen changes of head in her closet. Her transformations are certain to fill young children with puzzled horror rather than with the delicious mirth that Margaret Hamilton generated with her over-the-top parody...
...million "live-action adventure fantasy" promises to be something of a Star Woz, with veterans of that more modern epic creating special effects and producing the movie for Walt Disney. ("Toto, I really don't think we're in Kansas any more.") Dorothy will be played by Fairuza Balk, 9, a Vancouver schoolgirl who emigrated to Canada from her native California. There will be a host of new characters, including Tik Tok the robot and Billina the talking hen. Sounding already like a seasoned pro, Balk is not brought up short in the least by the prospect...
