...Cruise, 27, is the movies' biggest star, with nothing but promise on the horizon. Just ask two masters he has apprenticed with: Dustin Hoffman, the decade's most lauded actor, and Paul Newman, the last golden exemplar of Hollywood star quality. "There's no sense of a crest in Tom," says Hoffman, who won an Oscar as Cruise's brother in Rain Man. "His talent is young, his body is young, his spirit is young. He's a Christmas tree -- he's lit from head to toe." Newman, who played Cruise's mentor in The Color of Money, considers...

...baseball, the last thing America's growing legion of gamblers needs is an example of an admitted heavy bettor blithely denying he has done anything wrong and actually commanding the sympathy of people who continue to worship him. The lure of excessive gambling is too great, even without an exemplar of Rose's stature. Shah, moreover, owes his position at least in part to strong backing from the Pakistani intelligence service, a source of support that is resented by many Afghans, who view it as meddling...

...course, earnest Julius who initiates the search for his long-lost brother. But after the pair are reunited, Vincent gets the most out of their partnership: a gorgeous set of muscles to help him fend off debt collectors and a moral exemplar who finally sets him on the path of righteousness. Still, Julius doesn't come off badly: he learns to drink beer, chat up girls and use a microwave. Both stars are expert at playing dumb in highly contrasting ways, and their search for their mother has its touching aspects. The whole movie has a warmth about it that...
