Belonging to the fourth generation of a woolen family, he early left his native Germany, started a new business in Passaic, N. J. During World War I he told the Senate Military Affairs Committee that Army uniform specifications reeked, drew up new specifications, still in use, thereby won the Certificate of Distinguished Service from a grateful administration.
