...scarred little picture has rested unidentified for more than a century in the collection of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania. It is the work of a minor Swiss artist named Pierre Eugène du Simitière, who settled in Philadelphia and became Jefferson's friend. Paul Sifton, an American scholar and Du Simitière expert, last week showed evidence that the picture's subject is really Jefferson, done from life at 33 at the time of the Declaration of Independence...
...overwhelming concentration: a dozen watercolors and drawings by Cezanne (along with three paintings)--an amassment which the painter's biographer John Rewald calls second to none in the world. I refer the reader especially to two of the landscapes, Arbres Formant La Voute (1906) and Citerne au Parc du Chateau Noir (1895-1900),--in these water-colors the broken planes and volumes show the new dimension of time which the "Grandfather of Cubism" tentatively proposed as an extension of the three-dimensional perspective space system perfected by the Renaissance and exploited into trompel'oeil mediocrity by the Academics...

Of the Soutines, the Gorge du Loup is least noteworthy: I find most Soutine landscapes pretty dreary matters and this essay in murky tones and crude distortions is no exception to the rule. The last Soutine is an excellent Portrait of a Lady...

...RELIEF for shareholders getting stock under antitrust divestiture decrees will be favorably considered by Justice and Treasury Departments in hope of speeding settlement of Du Pont-G.M. case (TIME, June 27, 1957 et seq.), aiding in overall antitrust enforcement. But Treasury and Justice oppose as too liberal bill to free Du Pont stockholders from paying regular income tax on G.M. stock when they receive it, require only payment of lower capital gains tax rate when G.M. stock is sold...
