...singing the Hebrew blessings and screwing a flame-colored bulb into a plastic candelabrum sitting on my dresser, as Harvard advises, doesn't really complete the ritual for me. Some years, my family has packed a menorah and candles on overseas vacations because the practice of lighting it is so religiously symbolic and important to us. Christmas lights and trees, on the other hand, are traditional but not mandated by Christian teaching. They are pretty and sentimental but without direct religious symbolism...

...exceptions. And so self-described "diva" Jason McNeely still spends time with would-be ladies man Kirk Bangstad, though outside the group, it's pretty safe to say they would never know each other. Scots-Texan Chess Stetson remarks that "everyone in the group is such a good dresser," and while he says he doesn't quite understand the style, he chivalrously carries McNeely's suitcases of Hong Kong suits bought in the Orient. Given all his flair, a central point can get lost: he's also a masterly jazz performer. After a few ill-advised recent forays into funk and balladry, Connick here returns to form. Sure, the album could do without some of the slower numbers, but there's a lot to love--the sparkling title track, a rendition of Time After Time. Connick's vocals are deft and his piano playing fluid. A swing...
