Readers for whom Watership Down is a cult object will doubtless find the animated screen version of Richard Adams' tale lacking in those metaphorical, humanistic overtones and undertones that made this novel about a warren of freedom-loving bunny rabbits a bestseller. The film treats the story as a straightforward adventure, full of, shall we say, harebreadth escapes and ear-chomping fights. Lake's adaptation draws from a variety of Carroll's material, including Alice in Wonderland and his lesser known works and papers. But not all of it belongs in an adaptation of the light-hearted fantasy Through the Looking Glass. Doubtless Carroll's story was intended to do more than entertain little girls, and the elements of social satire and existential questioning which Lake points out in his program notes are certainly part of the depth and appeal of the book. In addition, Dukakis, though far from a big-spending liberal, had raised taxes after promising in his 1974 campaign that he would not. King is clearly to the right of his Republican opponent, Francis Whiting Hatch Jr., a proper Yankee of venerable lineage who is attracting the support...

...cavernous eighth floor has been designated Cafe-Bar. Therein until midnight the visitor can eat watermelon or sherbet, sip his choice of poison, from tepid beer to fu-te-ka (vodka), and yak until yawn. Sorry, no floor show, dancing or Hangchow-panky, though such dubious distractions are doubtless only a few short years away...

...before the trial begins, the experimental plan must be filed for approval with the Food and Drug Administration, whose commissioner, Donald Kennedy, has in the past called Laetrile a "fraud" and "useless." Nevertheless Kennedy too would doubtless like the Laetrile monkey off his back, and he is expected to approve the plan...
