Eckhart is one of the most noteworthy examples of the believers in early German mystic ideas. He was born about 1260, and after receiving a good education he entered the Dominican order, and became a preacher of no mean ability. His beliefs, though rather startling to his uneducated countrymen, were by no means new. He taught the Catholic religion, but he was so original and independent in his views, that his preaching became the thought of a soul alone with God.
