...album kicks off with a track that never made it to Bedtime Stories, Baerwald's fine solo debut: A Secret Silken World, a chronicle of a Saturday- night pickup. Then it ricochets into The Got No Shotgun HydraHead Octopus Blues, which takes up -- with pulsing drums and crunching guitar -- the matter of reciprocal footsie between government and drug dealers. The record is not an editorial, however. Baerwald is not interested in pointing fingers; he wants to nail a mood of corruptive malaise and the autoeroticism of power. One of the record's spookiest and loveliest songs, The Postman, takes...
...BROADWAY MUSICAL HAS INFLUENCED the form more than Oklahoma!, which integrated songs and dances into narrative. Its debut 50 years ago this month launched the partnership of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein, who went on to Carousel, South Pacific, The King and I and The Sound of Music. Their words and music are lovingly recalled in A GRAND NIGHT FOR SINGING, a revue at New York City's premier cabaret, Rainbow & Stars. The show is one of hundreds of ways the anniversary is being marked -- from productions, concerts, CDs and books to a museum show of set designs...
...Zippel, whose lyrics for City of Angels were the wittiest in years. Graciela Daniele, a six-time Tony nominee, was recruited to mount musical numbers. The leads were cast with Bernadette Peters, the reigning diva of musicals, and Martin Short, an effervescent TV and film comic making his Broadway debut. So potent was the combination that a year in advance, industry leaders pegged the show to sweep the Tonys...

The hueless hops will debut in test markets later this month. Aside from its unorthodox appearance, a can of Miller Clear has as much alcohol as regular beer, but has 122 calories per 12-oz. serving, slightly fewer than in amber-hued cousins like Miller High Life. The theory: What...
...JEFF GREENFIELD POINTED OUT IN AN amusing piece on Sunday's debut of DAY ONE, new TV shows often founder by experimenting too boldly (see 20/20 and PrimeTime Live). Perhaps with that in mind, the first episode of ABC's new magazine show emphasized old-fashioned, straight-ahead journalism. Most of the program was devoted to host Forrest Sawyer's report on a Portland, Oregon, man convicted of attempted murder for sleeping with his next-door neighbor when he knew he had AIDS. It was engrossing in the familiar 60 Minutes manner: dramatic storytelling, a clear...
