What is surprising about All Fools Day is that it does not aspire to Morrison's bluesy work with Them, nor to his famous jazz-inflected tunes on Moondance and Astral Weeks. Rather, lead-singer and principle Saint Chris Bailey produces a near perfect cop of Into The Music, one of Morrison's more recent and unjustifiably over looked disks...

Certainly, Nolte's character merits a few good chuckles. For one thing, here's a good guy who always wears black--in stark contrast to Boothe's omnipresent white suit. Nick sure is tough. He's the type of cop who casually slips vital evidence into his shirt pockets with his keys. The type of cop who cares but does not raise an eyebrow when he sees his best friend (Rip Torn) gunned down. The type of cop who says things like, "I'm particular who I drink with." The type of cop who is one walking macho cliche...

...thing, there's Mel Gibson and Danny Glover, both delightful in their roles as cop partners. Fans of the two actors can perhaps puzzle over the bizarre coincidence (?) that both men appear naked in their first moments on screen, but go on to wear trousers throughout the rest of the film...
