In January 1999, at the first meeting of the council's Student Affairs Committee, Gusmorino and Shumsky independently introduced the idea of selling textbooks on-line. They wanted to write a computer algorithm that could compare prices from a number of different on-line book vendors, factoring in shipping costs...
Gusmorino, a computer science concentrator, immediately began working on a demo. Shumsky prepared a report to present to the CUE, which then approved the project in the spring.
First, students pick their courses. This spring the site only searches for books from courses in the Core Curriculum and five other departments: chemistry, computer science, economics, government and mathematics.
"The main core concept in all the computer code is standard for each school," Tseng said. "The way you personalize [for a school] is through the data--textbook lists--and you also need marketing."
