...Gore camp trying to hold the line now. "A wise man does not try to hurry history," was what Warren Christopher had to say to the Cheney clip on an abbreviated "Late Edition." The current Senate Majority Leader, Trent Lott, would probably still run the place informally, since Republicans would be in the majority on Jan. 20, no matter which man became president, Daschle aides thought. If it's Dubya, Lieberman keeps his Senate seat and Dick Cheney casts tie-breaking votes to give Republicans control in the 50-50 chamber; if it's Al, Lieberman gives up his Senate seat and Lott controls with a 51-49 majority. Even the police were laughing. "Gore Got More. Gore Got More," sang the Gore camp. "We Won, Three Times. It's Time For You To Go," replied the Bush fans. There was more: "Cheney Needs a Heart, Bush Needs a Brain," from the Gore camp. To which the Bush fans replied: "Hey, Hey. Ho, Ho. Al Gore's Got to Go." ...Gore had already turned Bush and Cheney down in advance in Sunday's New York Times, in the form of a thoroughly planted article titled "Gore Is Said to Harbor Unshakeable Conviction That He Has Won the Election." John M. Broder's survey of Gore's "associates" included such lines as "Mr. Gore is frustrated, even embarrassed, they say, by the legal maneuvering he has set in motion in this quest to prove he won the balloting in Florida."
