...revenge of the real-world retailers. After years of being told they didn't get the Net, sites like Walmart.com and Target.com are suddenly the fastest-growing shopping destinations on the Web. Over the past five weeks, visits to "multichannel" dotcoms (a.k.a. clicks-and-mortar, those with a catalog or store behind them) have shot up 67%, compared with a 42% seasonal rise for "pure-play" merchants (which exist only online, like Amazon.com) Walmart.com alone is gaining 80% more cybershoppers every week. Incoming CEO Jeanne Jackson raised eyebrows when she closed the site for renovations two months...
...That is what the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) has tried to do in a mammoth show that opened last month: "Made in California: Art, Image and Identity, 1900-2000." It involves some 800 works in just about every imaginable medium, set forth by a team of catalog writers and curators as long as the credit crawl on a George Lucas movie, under the general direction of LACMA's senior curator, Stephanie Barron. Its size makes for fatigue, and parts of it might have fared better as documentary film. But the story it tells is an absorbing...

...tunes as strong as any he's ever recorded; along with the Midler duet highlights include "My Cello," "I Don't Want Love" and the revved-up "Meet Me on the Corner," in which Hicks and Costello volley the lyrics fast and furiously. Always fond of revisiting his back catalog, Hicks reprises his classic "I Scare Myself," and in the process reminds us how few songwriters have come along since who can successfully combine humor, pathos, irony and innocence.
