Popularly obscure may be Union Carbide & Carbon, not at all is Cornelius Kingsley Garrison Billings, last week elected Union Carbide & Carbon's Board Chairman. Following the death (TIME, April 8 et seq.} of Myron Timothy Herrick, who was Honorary Board Chairman, George O. Knapp, Board Chairman, added Honorary to his title and Mr. Billings, member of the Executive Committee, moved into the Chairmanship. What the deadly fumes were composed of was only guessed. Apparently it was a mixture. The coroner had the blood of several victims examined and found bromine and hydrocyanic acid (both deadly). Others hazarded that there were quantities of carbon monoxide in the gas. The fact that many, not apparently suffering at first, later succumbed, led to the supposition that nitrogen dioxide (brown gas like bromine) was one of the poisons...
