...playing many attention-grabbing cinematic tricks, so good acting is crucial here. Fortunately, all three principals give rounded, believable performances even while improvising much of the dialogue. Heather (Heather Donahue) plays the director and narrator of the documentary. Her drive keeps the project going, but her badgering of jockish cameraman Mike (Michael Williams) and easy-going soundman Josh (Joshua Leonard) causes tension. As things go awry, however, the power structure breaks down. Their relationships become more subtle and volatile as their fear wears on them and paranoia looms. ...women's magazines (but that's another discussion). Esquire has just come off a recent run of inexplicable covers that included cadaverish portraits of Fred Rogers and Bill Murray; on its February issue it has Pamela Anderson bending so far forward that she's in danger of assaulting the cameraman. The magazine tries to justify this pose with a three-part package billed as BREASTS! THE TRIUMPH OF CLEAVAGE CULTURE. Understand, then, that Anderson's breasts are being used not to goose magazine sales but to provide ironic commentary on...what? Anderson's breasts? This is a sad and pathetic...

David Johnson, former senior S.L.O.C. vice president, was more direct and equally eloquent in responding to the charges. When a TV crew showed up at his door last Monday to ask about his resignation from the committee, Johnson yelled at the woman reporter, grabbed her microphone, kicked the male cameraman and seized his camera. Which is to say, No comment...

...Moore, who makes a living satirizing the pompous and the hypocritical in films and on television, arrived last Thursday at the Rayburn House office building on Capitol Hill, site of the solemn Watergate impeachment hearings of 24 years ago, wearing a bright green baseball cap and trailing a cameraman. He was there to collect footage for his new cable-TV show, appropriately titled The Awful Truth. But he was having trouble mocking the independent counsel and the impeachment proceedings against Bill Clinton. Why?
