...every kick. Minot punted nine times, and the Army backs did not run these back for ten yards altogether. Minot played excellently, hitting the line hard and fast, but his punting was even more phenomenal. His nine punts averaged 37 yards and all but one were made against a brisk wind. Leslie, when substituted for Frothingham, was absolutely steady, so that he could always be counted on for a substantial gain, while, in addition, he made a sensational catch of a short onside kick. The line played very well, the defence being especially strong, for West Point's two first...
...light order only. For the first 15 minutes the entire squad of 66 men was drilled in tackling the dummy. The line men were then given practice in starting, and the backs were coached in punting, dodging, and catching punts. The ends worked at breaking through interference. After a brisk signal practice, the first team went into the Locker Building without a scrimmage. Two teams made up of substitutes and second team men had a light scrimmage. In a brisk paddle down stream to a quarter of a mile beyond the Longwood bridge, the boat spaced well between strokes, which averaged about 30 a minute. The men caught the water with a vigor and pressed hard on their foot-braces at the beginning of each stroke. Flint at bow rowed in his usual smooth form. The four stern men have varied very little in their excellent work for more than a month. Filley at 8 has a good sense of time...
Tuesday a change was made in the boat. Newhall was moved to 7 from 2, and Fish, who rowed 7 last year in the Freshman crew, was tried at 2. Yesterday the men were given a short, brisk row to the Stillman Infirmary and back. It was extremely cold and a raw wind was blowing, but the work as a whole was satisfactory. The men got their arms away from their bodies quickly, made a hard catch, and carried the stroke through with life...
