The Wanderings of Alexis is written in a good, nervous style which shows the influence of modern French prose in its liveliness, and it contains some good thought. An Effigy written by a graduate of '41 relates an amusing incident in early college life, and the Portrait of a Pencil is a very well conceived tale. In Dr. Palmer's Experiment we have another of the double-identity stories which are so frequent in current literature...
Thomas Francis Hearn, a special student, died on the twentieth of last July at his home in South Boston, of pneumonia. Mr. Hearn was a member of high standing of the class of '85, B. L. S., and his bright, genial disposition made him universally beloved by his class-mates. Owing to weakness in his eyes, he was obliged to suspend his studies at the Latin School two years before graduation and entered business. But his desire to pursue a college course was so strong that be devoted his leisure hours to study and entered college with his old class...
...Company have appeared outside their own theatre, which seems a pity, as it is a company of such merit. The opera is founded on the story of 'Robert Macaire,' though so very little is left of the original story as to be hardly recognizable. The music and dialogue are bright and taking, and altogether it is one of the best light operas we have seen for a long while...
