...Marber’s (“Closer”) screenplay holds onto every detail until the moment of greatest effect. Thus, by the end, we are disturbed to find ourselves so well inside the mind of a borderline sociopath like Ms. Covett. The story concerns the arrival of Blanchett??s Sheba Hart at the gritty London middle school where Covett chairs the history department. Hart is an instant school celebrity, more for her figure than for her teaching abilities. “Is she a sphinx, or merely stupid?” Dench’s character...

...clear favorite. Blanchett won this award two years ago for her portrayal of Katharine Hepburn in “The Aviator.”Both from “Babel,” Kikuchi, who plays a sexually-frustrated deaf girl, and Barraza, the nanny of Pitt and Blanchett??s children, provide two of the most heart-breaking performances of the year. And if nothing else, The Aviator reiterates that having Ian Holm and Alec Baldwin on screen, if only briefly, is nearly always worthwhile. Unfortunately, Cate Blanchett??s portrayal of Katharine Hepburn doesn’t fare as well—within five seconds of her appearance she was grating on my nerves. If the real Hepburn was as annoying as in this portrayal, it becomes easier to imagine why Hughes lost his mind...

...self-imposed mission to clear the streets of drugs and pushers, culminating in her brutal death at the hands of gang leaders fighting the momentum of her crusade. Most important, it is the story of Guerin herself: her character, her motivations, her fears and her doubts. Cate Blanchett??s resplendent performance as Guerin seethes with passion and intensity in every scene. It is her skillful work—as well as that of her supporting cast—that compensates for the film’s directorial inadequacies...
