...dealbreaker will be fiscal discipline. Greenspan's own view of the surplus's long-term viability will be a major factor, and you can bet he's skeptical about not only the wisdom of any 10-year economic forecasts but politicians' ability to keep spending in check. But here the CBO's new numbers should come into play again - that surplus may be part fantasy, but at least it's getting larger...
...choice but to start all over again? Bush campaigned for a year against partisan politics--and that was before partisanship became so poisonous that it polluted every institution of government. The man who talked less about what he would do than how he would do it finds that his bet has been called. You promise to be a uniter, not a divider? Here is a broken, cloven polity. You promise to change the tone? We can't bear to listen anymore to the rancor of the past five weeks, or eight years, or 13, if you extend this period...

As Collins sees it, the winner of the rancorous contest that started in 1998 is not any individual scientist or team of scientists but everybody in the world. In essence, what the race produced was a collective self-portrait at a faster pace and cheaper price than most had dared dream. And what could be wrong with that...
HARD FACT You would think calcium supplements would strengthen nails, but don't bet on it. Doctors compared the toenails and fingernails of postmenopausal women who took the supplements with those who didn't. Result? There was no difference in nail strength, appearance or rate of growth between the groups. Turns out that nail quality has more to do with protein content and the arrangement of certain cells than the amount of calcium in the diet...
