WEST GERMANY. Despite deutsche mark dominance, the Strategic Traveler can do surprisingly well. Rooms are not expensive in certain outlying areas that are themselves worth seeing and are close to major cities. An hour from Munich is Augsburg, home of the Holbein family, whose 1,000-year-old cathedral has the oldest stained glass in Germany. An easy train ride from expensive Heidelberg is Würzburg, a city of baroque architecture and prized wines. Another good base is Rüdesheim, convenient to the Rhine and the wine country. A three-hour boat ride from Rüdesheim to Koblenz costs...
STAINED GLASS. Photographs by Sonia Halliday and Laura Lushington. 207 pages. Crown. $39.95. The authors traveled throughout Europe selecting and photographing the world's finest examples of sacred and profane stained glass. The result is a comprehensive guide, from the llth century Old Testament windows in Augsburg Cathedral to the 20th century revival of the craft as seen in modern churches as well as the temples of commerce and art. Martin Olav Sabo, 36. As the Democratic-Farmer-Labor speaker of Minnesota's house, Sabo has political power second only to that of Governor Anderson. Sabo grew up in Alkabo, N. Dak., worked his way through Augsburg College in Minneapolis, ran for the state legislature only a year after graduating. He won again and again, each time carrying on old-fashioned doorbell-ringing campaigns. In 1969 he was elected minority leader, became house speaker when the D.F.L. won the house four years later. He calls himself "a pragmatic liberal"; as speaker, he manages rather than initiates bills...
...Martin Olav Sabo, 35, the son of Norwegian immigrants, worked his way through Augsburg College. In 1960, as he was preparing to go on to graduate school, a friend encouraged him to run for the state legislature. He did and won, several times. By 1969, at the age of 30, he was the youngest returning member of the house. But he had accumulated enough experience and respect from his colleagues to be elected minority leader. In 1972, he became speaker of the house. The job entitles him to a $700-a-year raise, but in order to support his wife...
...study, to be published jointly by Augsburg Publishing House and Paulist Press in September, is a part of an eight-year-old, officially sanctioned dialogue between Lutherans and Roman Catholics over issues that divide the two communions. The talks have already produced documents on Lutheran and Roman Catholic approaches to the Nicene Creed, baptism, the Eucharist and priestly ministry, all of which show remarkable basic agreement. The study on Peter, along with an examination of the development of the papacy in early church history, will provide background for the next major document, on the primacy and authority of the Pope...
