...United Airlines plane from London to Washington was forced to land in Maine because a barred passenger, Yusuf Islam, formerly known as the singer Cat Stevens, was onboard. Last week, in an unpublicized but potentially dangerous incident, a Royal Jordanian Airlines flight was allowed to take off from Amman with a Middle Eastern passenger whose name was on the list. Though U.S. officials discovered while the plane was en route that he was a no-fly passenger, the plane was permitted to land at its destination, Chicago's O'Hare airport...

...artists. Karim Dabbah, a 68-year-old painter from Ramallah, argues that Palestinian political art "defended a noble idea. New artists are affected by sick art from Europe. It is against Palestinian values." The debate is more than simply aesthetic: Ismail Shammout, a leading Palestinian artist who lives in Amman, was refused permission to open an art school in Ramallah last year because he declined to paint a portrait of Yasser Arafat. Furthermore, before the invasion of their country, no Iraqis were involved in suicide attacks. Now, even though al-Zarqawi, a Jordanian, says he masterminded the Amman attacks, all four of the bombers came from Iraq. That means Iraq has become a fertile ground for recruiting suicide bombers. ...most of the nearby governments believe toppling Saddam Hussein was good for Iraq and the region, the Arab world has almost universally condemned the U.S. invasion. Beyond that, many local leaders believe that the war has fueled terrorism in the region, as in the recent triple suicide bombing in Amman, Jordan. "You have ended up with a great big area--from the Jordanian border to the outskirts of Baghdad--being a lawless and terror-infested territory," says Ali Shukri, a former adviser to Jordan's King Hussein...
