...interesting improvement on Transit IVA is its nuclear power supply, built for the Atomic Energy Commission by the Martin Co. Tucked under Transit's big drum is a 5-in. white metal ball surrounding a pellet of plutonium 238*, a rare isotope of plutonium that gives off enough alpha radiation to heat itself as it decays. Thermocouples transform this ever-renewed heat into 2.7 watts of electricity for two of Transit's four transmitters. The little generator weighs only 4.6 lbs., but its plutonium fuel, with a half life of 90 years, is expected to supply power...

...generation, Moscow monopolized Mongolia's diplomatic and trade relations to the exclusion of all foreigners, and particularly the Chinese. Mongolia's wool and hides went westward to Russia, in exchange for a trickle of manufactured goods and swarms of political instructors. The Russians introduced their own Cyrillic alpha bet; Buddhist lamas and a few rich herders were persecuted to "free" the masses for membership in the new cooperatives...

...with helium atoms and were picked up by a copper conveyor belt. At intervals, an automatic device moved the copper belt a short distance, bringing the newly created atoms close to a series of silicon radiation detectors. About five times each hour the detectors signaled the capture of an alpha particle charged with 8,600,000 electron volts of energy. Nuclear theory predicts that this is just the particle that would be emitted during the disintegration of element 103. The scientists estimated its half-life as eight seconds, and they named it lawrencium, after Ernest Lawrence, founder of their laboratory...
