...movie, written by Leigh's mother Barbara Turner and directed by Ulu Grosbard, is a two-hander about the edgy relationship of show-biz sibs. Georgia (Mare Winningham) sings pop; she's famous and sensible, a caring mom and sister. Sadie (Leigh) sings barroom rock and thinks the way to be Janis Joplin is to do drugs, embarrass herself onstage and lurch toward an early, ugly death. At the mike, in the van, at the airport, she goes self-destructively, picturesquely nuts...

Lidia (Lexi Randall) and her younger brother Stu (Elijah Wood) have it rough. Mom (Mare Winningham) has to be the family glue, because Dad (Kevin Costner) has returned from Vietnam damaged and crushed. By most standards, he is a failure, so he pours his ambitions into his kids, who think he's a saint. "Maybe he died in that war," one of them says, "and God sent him back to us for one last visit." ...Gene Hackman): put your trust in blood kin and in the law. What Earp sees in his brothers is impossible to say, since they are so poorly particularized -- and encumbered with unpleasantly fractious wives to boot. Like almost everything else in this fragmented and ambiguous movie, it just sort of happens...

...mystery plot unfolds, it is Hooch, ferociously loyal to both his former master and his new one, who does most of the protecting. He's obviously never heard of Miranda rights. Not that he is a one-note character: he introduces Turner to romance with the local veterinarian (Mare Winningham), and in moments of repose he has a watchful sobriety that becomes a comment on the human propensity to rush around needlessly. If food, sex or loyalty is not at issue, what's all the excitement about...

...Stories has down-home flakes down pat, but here they are too pat. Meet -- as if you hadn't met them in Southern literature a hundred times before -- the irrepressible outcast (Rosanna Arquette), the sensitive wanderer (Eric Roberts) in search of Miz Right, the good-ole-girl barmaid (Mare Winningham), the ex-jock with itchy trousers (Jim Youngs). In her eye blink of a role, Winningham is a buoyant delight, and Youngs nicely fleshes out his cardboard stud, but everyone else goes under in a sea of mannerisms. Arquette brings a clangorous winsomeness to the sort of cracked-belle character...
