There is a sort of poetry in absorbing the details of the construction process. Many a day have I laid aside my books and stared intensely at the backhoes, as they scoop dirt up, swivel around, dump it elsewhere and pat it down. This is an immense improvement over watching the cars that sat stationary in the lot all day, which was the only distraction my window provided before the construction began...

...mean, I enjoy watching steroidinflated monsters without necks roll around in the mud as much as the next guy. Honest--I think the forward pass should assume its rightful status alongside Mr. Potato Head and the swivel chair as one of mankind's three greatest inventions. I think the Super Bowl is underhyped. I love football--really...

The forward-mounted canards swivel back during high-speed flight to further reduce drag and are equipped with elevators that eliminate the need for a tail. Beech is keeping the Starship's performance characteristics secret, but early reports suggest it can reach cruising speeds approaching those of business jets at about 40% the fuel cost of a Gates Learjet or a Cessna Citation...

...Broadway, Nunn insisted on a completely new book and an equally new look. Central to his vision is a set made of towers painted to look like concrete and placed on turntables so they swivel to become a hotel lobby, an airport, a convention hall, a bedroom. To some extent these spaces resemble one another, but that is Nunn's point. Where the London Chess suggests the survival of kitschily various cultures, the Broadway version implies the triumph of a soulless international pragmatism that finds its perfect expression in interchangeable, neobrutalist architecture...
