With his three brothers he started his career by buying a gold mine near Pike's Peak, Col., which was thought to be a quartz claim. General Fitz-John Porter† attempted to bore into the claim. Gold-miner Smith forthwith made an opening into the outlaw shaft from below, built a fire, and smoked out the General's workers. The General promptly installed a huge fan which blew the smoke down...
