...movie centers round Carter and Carter alone, the other characters are left curiously two-dimensional, with no real reason for the audience to relate to them, and it's hard especially not to moan the unused talent of the marvelous Hannah in particular. Depalowski is the flattest, most stereo-typical, most singularly bland villain imaginable. The three Canadians, despite interesting flashes, are really nothing more than ornament to the film. And Martin, in Jewison's single-minded determination to parallel his story to Carter's, becomes no more than a rather tedious character...
...short, Stereolab live was very different than Stereolab in the stereo lab. The band's sound is characteristically everywhere: their records run th aural gamut from fuzzy lounge-lizard pop to gritty reverb rock (and most often are a synth-washed mix of both). Through it all, though, they manage to give you the cold shoulder. Morgane Lhote's Moog must have a special dial for "disaffected": a breath of chilling ennui blows through all their music, a vague sense of world-weary aloofness that has its heart somewhere in songwriter Sadier's low-mixed lyrics...

The sole exception is the uncut version of The Sorcerer's Apprentice extracted from the original Fantasia, in which Leopold Stokowski hypnotized an anonymous band of Hollywood studio musicians into sounding just like the Philadelphia Orchestra in its blazingly vital prewar prime. Even the ancient paleo-stereo sound track of that sequence has a raw, visceral impact missing from the glossy digital audio heard elsewhere in Fantasia...
...Belle and Sebastian, for a great deal of current indie rock is mellow, child-like and backward-looking. And most such bands are aware of their forerunners. If you can't hear the Beach Boys in everything from ber-hip Elephant 6 (Beulah, Neutral Milk Hotel, The Apples in Stereo), then you need look no further than their official press releases...
