Trying to quiet the striking truckers, President Carter met with Senator Edward Kennedy last week at the White House to announce their joint sponsorship of a sweeping new plan to deregulate the trucking industry. The Government would stop regulating rates, freight and entry requirements, steps that the Administration estimates would save the public $5 billion a year in shipping costs.
