WITH whom the idea of a "Collegiate spectrum" first originated could hardly be ascertained now; but it seems the most natural thing in the world for a college, like other associations of men, to choose a color or colors to be the symbol of its individuality and of a friendly rivalry with other colleges. The custom has been undoubtedly borrowed from the English Universities, and was probably at once adopted by all our prominent colleges, as soon as one of them had set the example. ...Spectrum is an improvement upon most of the numbers of last year. It contains one or two good "heavy articles," interesting extracts from the diary of a young surveyor, some slight abuse of the Faculty, and a copy of verses called "Dished," which would indisputably prove - if there were no other evidence - that the study of the mere exact science is not favorable to the spirit of poetry. In the course of eight verses the poet informs us that he has been dropped from '75 to '76. "Would that the Faculty had been more merciful!" say the readers...

Engineeringy is good! Moreover, it is only one of those words which impart such a vague flavor of Physics and Mathematics to the whole number. The column headed "Spectrum Lines" shows conclusively that the editor's "lines have not fallen in pleasant places," for the wit and point in its jokes are carefully concealed. In other respects the paper is quite commendable...
