Witnessing the hundreds who turned out to watch the fireworks in the stands of Valley College stadium made this cynical place seem a little more apple-pie American. That was until I was informed that both CBS and Paramount were charging admission for their fireworks in other parts of LA. Another reminder that entertainment doesn't come cheap, even on a National Holiday. Maybe Los Angeles is America though, and the archetypes are just that--out-dated non-existent memories...
...magic, Bullock tries to repress it, downplaying her powers in order to fit in. Kidman does her best to portray the bad girl who uses her magic for fun, but such a sickly sweet Bullock offsets her. Kidman walks into Bullock's attempts to create a normal life in smalltown New England, saying things like, "Hang on to your husbands, ladies." But we end up feeling sorry for Kidman instead of rejoicing in her power. It is goody-two-shoes Bullock who does most of the magic...

Despite the rare slow point (run-of-the-mill stories do come up, after all), Sayles is too honestly interested in filming his characters' story-telling and story-acting for the audience to become restless. As a relaxed murder mystery, a view of smalltown politics, and a not at all taxing study in intergenerational relations, the movie is well worth a look and should not be left in the dust of its bigger-footed, ham-handed cousins the blockbusters. In short, the movie's pace and generational eye tends to leave you giving lingering...
