...appearances and sound problems be damned, this was a quality show. At 11pm, Matt Weinshall '02 stepped on stage with his guitar and his band, comprising Mike Liebman (keyboards), Dave Fisher '02 (bass), Jeff Rakofsky (drums) and Sara Zelle '03 (vocals). The tight ensemble work, sharp guitar playing and Zelle's stunning vocals brought life to the songs. Zelle's voice was both plaintive and powerful, injecting passion into lyrics such as "Baby, don't ask me to carry your weight" (from "I'm Here," the opening song). The band also played a superb arrangement of U2's "With...

...only emotion these deaths manage to evoke is indifference. Along the way the film manages to completely squander Emily Watson as Angela. She makes a valiant effort to portray Angela as a tough woman who's not too proud to beg for her children, but wasted are her sharp, delicate eyes and wonderfully expressive mouth. But timing the market rarely works anyway, so why not give yourself a chance. If you're tempted to cut and run--don't; and if you have cash earmarked for stocks after the New Year, start investing...

...piece has some eerily effective moments. The sponging of a condemned man's head makes electrocution seem a sacrament: baptism and extreme unction in a single dab. The healing scenes will evoke tears, some of them earned. And there's a lot of sharp acting, led by Hanks' pained restraint. The two villains are vigorously portrayed: a sadistic, craven guard (Doug Hutchison) and a strutting, rabid inmate (played with a daringly lunatic, dark-star quality by Sam Rockwell), whose crimes are even worse than we feared. At the core, though, one finds a slacky, sappy film. The human mystery that...
