...blockbuster radar, enjoyed a decent opening of $16.2 million, and $25.6 million for its first five days, for The Last Song. With the same learn-to-love-your-daddy plot as her Hannah Montana: The Movie hit from last spring, the new picture is based on a screenplay and novel by Nicholas Sparks (The Notebook, Dear John), the go-to guy for young-adult weepies. Once a princess of the Disney Channel, Cyrus has generated more than a quarter-billion dollars with her first three movies (the Hannah Montana concert film and movie, plus the animated feature Bolt, for which...

...helped by Feste's screenplay, which presents Grace as someone irrationally fixated on the minutiae of Bennett's death. Seventeen minutes elapsed between the moment Bennett's Karmann Ghia got T-boned by a pick-up truck at an intersection and his time of death. Grace wants desperately to know about those 17 minutes - but not about the hours her son spent immediately before the accident, having the greatest night of his life consummating a love for longtime high-school crush Rose (Carey Mulligan) - a girl to whom he had never dared speak until that last...

The final twist of Will Fetters' screenplay has already been revealed in some reviews (there are small clues in the film, but it is obvious only if you, like critics, see too many movies). It won't be here, although I see the temptation; it's challenging to accurately assess Remember Me's merits without discussing whether...

...excellent choice for Best Picture. Bigelow's job wrangling this orphan project into shape, and her shot-by-shot mastery of the story, should be considered no less impressive than her swaggering hero's effectiveness in defusing bombs on Baghdad streets. The same goes for Mark Boal's winning screenplay, based on his reporting for a Playboy nonfiction piece about IED squads (which really should have put the script in the Best Adapted Screenplay category). (See pictures of James Cameron's special effects...
