...into another Kosovo. Man is stupid, isn't he? He never learns from past mistakes. It wasn't very long ago that the tragedy of Kosovo occurred or that the Bosnians were butchered. Russia must be stopped from killing innocent men, women and children. All people have a right to express themselves and to strive to gain their independence. John Cloud's article on the after-effects of the Columbine shooting and the prevalence of "zero-tolerance" policies for campus violence was one-sided [NATION, Dec. 6]. Cloud makes it seem as though schools are suspending kids left and right for minor infractions, like having blue-dyed hair. I am an 18-year-old student in my last semester of high school, and I'm not alone in thinking that getting tough with kids and having a zero-tolerance rule for weapons and violent behavior are absolutely right. Maybe the youngsters who were singled out had prior records...

...Frank McCourt beautifully juggled contempt and sympathy in his memoir of growing up poor and wet in Limerick in the '30s and '40s, before squandering the goodwill he had accrued with the taint of 'Tis (it'll be a while before that sour screed is filmed). Parker, who did right by the Irish in The Commitments, has a go at the impossible task of adapting Angela's Ashes and trying to satisfy all those who loved the book so much that McCourt's painful past miraculously became theirs...
