...pretty remarks from lady friends about the magenta; it is far from exhilarating to overhear afterwards their candid opinion of what they take to be magenta. But who can blame them for wishing to disguise their real sentiments on light solferino or a mongrel pink? It is amusing on Regatta days to observe the variety of shades donned by Harvard's friends. They range from a delicate pink to a crimson so dark as to be almost maroon. If some one of our sister colleges with a similar color - and there are such - should make her appearance on the river...

...Yale Record of this week is a good number. Among other things it discusses the place of the next Regatta, approves of New London, and thinks that extortion would be the chief feature of a Regatta at Saratoga. It loses its temper in an attempt to "rough" the Magenta for venturing to say that in its last number it indulged "a wee bit in braggadocio," and makes one remark which may have been funny when it first appeared in Yale papers, though we have forgotten, and another which we do not repeat, because we are unwilling to believe that more...

...liberally to meet the expenses of their crew and having all winter long in the Gymnasium from ten to twelve men working for it; but our new associates seem entirely forgetful of the fact that the rest of the College expect them to send a crew to the next regatta. Yet perhaps I am wrong in this; perhaps the Freshmen are mindful of the fact, but think that all that is essential to success at the next race is to elect a captain, a man almost wholly ignorant of rowing, and to enter a crew in the Fall Races...

...inclined to indulge - we quote his own words - in "distorted and visionary imagination." For instance, does he feel quite sure about that generous rivalry to which he makes allusion? We regret to say that our remembrance of the scenes in the Massasoit House on the night after the last regatta pictures anything but a condition of "communion and fellowship" between some of the principal contestants. And is that ambition a laudable one, which allows a Princeton or a Harvard man to be careless of distinction in the sight of his Alma Mater alone, but would spur him on, with...

...editors of the Anvil have somewhere gotten possession of a back number of Old and New, and in an editorial they criticise the "regatta literature" of the periodical in question very severely. We should be very happy to quote them and let Harvard know what Dartmouth thinks; but the ungrammatical structure of their article is a bar to our so doing, from a feeling of deference to the Magenta and its readers...
