...Girl from Jones Beach (Warner) turns out to be blonde Virginia Mayo, a high-minded schoolteacher with a photogenic figure and a low I.Q. in matters of romance. To Ronald Reagan, a New York commercial artist, she looks like the perfect model for the perfect cover girl. To Eddie Bracken, a down-at-heels promoter, she looks like the promise of a fat commission if she can be teamed with Reagan in a television act. The problem: to persuade highbrow Miss Mayo to lend herself to such a lowbrow enterprise...
...only real fun to be had from the belaboring of this plot comes from Ronald Reagan, who rarely gets a crack at light comedy. He does a good job of giving some old gags a new gloss; and masquerading as an immigrant student in one of Schoolmarm Mayo's naturalization classes, he gets off an excellent range of muddled European accents. Brightest piece of invention: a bit of hot-weather Americana, in which the sound track picks up the nasal lovemaking of a Brooklyn couple in the moonlit shadows of Jones Beach...
Most of the talk is handled by a young scientist (Ronald Reagan) who is suffering from epilepsy, and a handsome widow (Viveca Lindfors) who is addicted to depressing chats with the spirit of her dead husband. Also involved in the impromptu panel discussions are a garrulous painter (Broderick Crawford) and the widow's younger sister (Osa Massen), who is a heavy tippler with leanings toward nymphomania...
Despite the low-keyed lighting and some ominous shots of stormy Florida coast, nothing much happens. In the course of the love story, Sweden's Viveca Lindfors is not only pleasant to look at, but appears to be an actress. Reagan plays the role of the epileptic with the abstracted air of a man who has just forgotten an important phone number...
John (Ronald Reagan) comes back from years in Europe to marry pining Mary (Patricia Neal). He is slightly handicapped because he has already entered a token marriage with an English girl-only to get her into the U.S. so that she can marry her long-lost love and John's old buddy (Jack Carson).
