...looks less promising; the settled old ways take on new luster. Anyone too inclined to idealize the countrified past, however, or dote on the imagined joys of continuity, might do well to study, as a cautionary text, this extraordinary portrait of an English village. Akenfield is a pseudonym for a real agricultural village of 300 souls about 90 miles and-until recently-several cultural centuries removed from London. "On the face of it," remarks Ronald Blythe, "it is the kind of place in which an Englishman has always felt it his right and duty to live . . . patently the real country...

Many years ago, when I was 17 or 18, living in China, my father introduced me to books of Vladimir Sirin, which was Nabokov's pseudonym at that time. The first books that I read were The Luzhin Defence; King, Queen, Knave; Invitation to an Execution and some delightful short stories written in Russian. While he was alive, the only one of his books that sold was a semi-pornographic novel that he'd written for a bet under a pseudonym; his most successful song, "Le Désérteur" (made popular in the States by Peter, Paul and Mary) was banned in France for its frank anti-war message. Meanwhile, Congress has eliminated HUAC in name only. The fact that the Committee took to a pseudonym represents no victory for the liberals, but at least the word "un-American" may begin to disappear from the national lexicon. This prospect, though, does not please Walter Goodman, author of The Committee, who sees HUAC's name as a perverse but lovable piece of Americana. "There is nothing un-American about the Un-American Activities Committee...just as there is nothing un-American about union-busting, anti-Semitism, or the Ku Klux Klan." For all its patriotism and bad meter, "HUAC...

...Mice. Parapsychology, in fact, is international. In Britain, Mathematician S. G. Soal has long toyed with basic ESP phenomena.* A respected French biologist, who carries out his parapsychological research under the pseudonym "Andrew Robinson" to avoid professional ridicule, recently claimed that his complicated electronic rigs suggest the possibility of communication between men and mice. Even Russia has its psychic expert: Dr. Leonid L. Vasiliev of the University of Leningrad, whose Mysterious Phenomena of the Human Psyche has become a bestseller in the Soviet Union...
