...pity is that such chances are so rare. The size and unwieldiness of this institution of learning is such as to prevent any but the slightest acquaintance from existing between student and instructor. The converse is the exception, not the rule. Therefore no persuasion of ours is necessary to prevail upon any one to seize this opportunity of coming in personal contact with one whom we so admire and esteem in the lecture room. The sole cause for regret is that the absence from Cambridge of so many of us prevents us from availing ourselves of this valuable privilege...

...Board of Overseers have at last taken action upon the majority and minority reports made by the Committee. Their action seems to us in the highest degree narrow-minded, and marks a strong check to the liberal tendency which should prevail in a great university like Harvard. Their recommendation amounts, in substance, to simply this: To prohibit all freshman intercollegiate contests in baseball, football, rowing and lacrosse; to allow none but University teams to engage in intercollegiate contests, and those only with Yale and minor New England college, thus barring out Columbia, Princeton, University of Pennsylvania and others...

But it is very surprising to find sometimes that degrees of the same grade granted by the same college do not always...

Many people excuse their selfish worldly lives on the plea that such a life as is enjoined in the text is impossible in this age of ours; which, with its boasted civilization and culture, is an age of mental incertitude, social destraction and moral confusion. The daily excitement which prevails unfits the soul for meditation. If we could but be transferred to the age of Abraham, or David, or even Cotton Mather, it would be easy to live a sober and godly life. But now the lust of the eye and the lust of the flesh, and of vain glory...

...newly erected toboggan slide; Brookline nightly draws from our number of student tobogganers. But this is all outside of the college. No, skating and tobogganing are not among our traditional list of college sports, so of course cannot possibly find their way into that list. New England exclusiveness must prevail here also...
