Society's horrified reaction has plenty of precedent as well. In Leviticus, God tells Moses: "Ye shall not round the corners of your heads, neither shalt thou mar the corners of thy beard. Ye shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor print any marks upon you." And John Bulwer's Anthropometamorphosis, Man Transformed or, the Artificial Changeling, Historically Presented, a Puritan diatribe published in 1653, railed against disfigurement of the body in pursuit of "ridiculous beauty," "filthy fineness" and "loathesome loveliness...

Armey has a point. But he isn't being very clear about the Bible. The Book of Leviticus commands us to murder homosexuals when we find them sleeping together. Some people would call this extreme. The Bible is also very clear about a number of other things. For example, when God catches a man picking up twigs on the Sabbath and thereby violating His law against working, He demands the man's death. Apparently, when He said you're not supposed to work on that day, He meant...

...Christopher G. Roberts '01 claims that "for Christians, homosexuality is a sin" and that therefore National Coming Out Day is a chance for them to "emphasize basic doctrine and make clear...the message of compassion in Christ's teachings." He uses an oft-quoted but obscure reference to Leviticus--taken out of context, no less--to support his claim...

...Christians, homosexuality is sin. Leviticus tells us: "To lie with a man as to lie with a woman is an abomination." Leviticus' teaching on homosexuality goes to clarifying the phrase "thou shall not committ adultery." Yet, all people sin, and a great number of college students committ adultery through premartial sexual relations, you say. This is true, but the reason that Christians show particular concern for the sin of homosexuals is that they have attached a political agenda to their sin that contravenes the word of God and attempts to establish sin as a societally acceptable choice. In so doing...

...concerning the Supreme Court these days reminds me of a Jay Leno skit in which the talk-show host goes out onto the street to test people's familiarity with Biblical trivia. A standard question in his repertoire: which of the following is not a Biblical book--Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus or DeGeneres? Needless to mention, Leno's hapless guinea pig does not "choose wisely." I sometimes wonder whether Leno would not find equal ignorance were he to ask: who of the following is not a Supreme Court justice--Rehnquist, Ginsburg, Scalia or Sorvino...
