...Mideast will offer Bill Clinton poor respite from his domestic troubles when he touches down late Saturday. Israeli security forces fired on Palestinian protesters in a West Bank town Friday killing two and wounding 50. "We haven't seen incidents like this since the height of the Intifada uprising ten years ago," says TIME Jerusalem bureau chief Lisa Beyer. The immediate flash point is Israel's refusal to release Palestinian security prisoners, but the turmoil highlights the limits of the Wye accord. "Wye produced a new agreement, but no new trust or goodwill," says Beyer. "The two sides still hate...

...have somehow entered a Faustian contract and sold their souls to the devil. Sure, I have met people upon whom I wish the proletarian revolution, but on the other end of the materialist spectrum sit social-justice advocates who attack recruiting seniors with a vengeance that makes the Intifada look like a bunch of PBH counselors. Hearing some of the charges waged against recruiting seniors makes me grateful for the fire codes which have prevented those social justice advocates from holding candlelight vigils in front of their dorm rooms...

Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat's outburst last week -- threatening to renew the intifada and warning Israel "our rifles are ready" -- seemed strange, given that the Knesset was debating a controversial land transfer to the Palestinian Authority. According to a senior aide, however, the chairman's remarks, to a gathering of his Fatah organization, were meant for local consumption only. Arafat, says the official, is furious with the group?s secretary-general, Marwan Barghouti, who has led an anticorruption campaign within Fatah that culminated in an anti-P.A. riot in Ramallah last month. The ferocious rhetoric, says the source...

...will the Palestinians and Israel's Arab neighbors have the patience to wait out Netanyahu's demise? "Well, it's a very risky strategy," says Fischer. "Already the indications from Arafat are that the Intifada uprising could be revived if there's no progress in the peace process, and that would create a volatile situation throughout the region." The Palestinians have implored President Clinton to use some of Washington's power over Israel to force Netanyahu to go along with the peace process, but Clinton's record suggests he regards sweating Israel as an unacceptable domestic political risk. Which probably...

JERUSALEM: In an action reminiscent of the days of the Intifada, some two million Palestinians closed up shop Wednesday in response to Yasser Arafat's call for a general strike. Stung by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's plans for new Jewish settlements on the West Bank, the demolition of a Palestinian youth center in east Jerusalem and an Israeli unwillingness to fulfill the peace agreement, Arafat called the first general strike since May 1994. Throughout Palestinian areas of the West Bank, Gaza Strip, and East Jerusalem, streets emptied as schools, stores and transportation shut down. "The strike...
