...late Adlai Stevenson who said that public opinion is the sovereign of us all. I have always believed that the press has an enormous responsibility in helping to form a sound public opinion rooted in truth and fact and not in conjecture, innuendo and/or rumor. The writer of this article did little to form such public opinion. That was due in part to his being duped by double-speak by some and in part to the paucity of his individual investigative initiative, which went no deeper than to quote The Boston Phoenix. Such limitation suggests a less than maximal presence...

Women in the speedy suburbs need a guilt-free place to gather. Old-fashioned women's clubs no longer seem to fill the bill. The country-club lunch -- a large helping of chitchat served with a garnish of innuendo -- is too fattening and "unsupportive." Self-employed or with part-time jobs, with homes to run and volunteer work to do, what woman can spare three hours for the afternoon bridge club? But if anyone can bring every last Democratic Senator along, it is Sam Nunn. Before the Armed Services Committee vote, he persuaded Richard Shelby of Alabama, one of the most conservative Democratic Senators, to join his more liberal colleagues in rejecting Tower. The nominee...

Character assassination by innuendo is hardly new, but these tactics are really all the militants have left. The legal case against the Fly Club (if indeed it ever emerges from MCAD at all) is tenuous at best. Even Perspective now admits that if the clubs are really private property there is (or should be) no further debate. In a choice between the continued existence of the final clubs and government assumption of the right to tell private citizens with whom they must associate on their own private property, the clubs must win. The freedom of association guaranteed by the Constitution...
