...June of 1860, less than a year after the publication of Darwin??s “The Origin of Species,” Samuel Wilberforce, the Bishop of Oxford, and biologist Thomas Huxley addressed the claims of the controversial book in a highly publicized debate. Wilberforce, speaking first, ended his oration by asking Huxley whether his apish ancestors were to be found on his mother’s or his father’s side. Huxley’s reply, now a cocktail party quotable for Darwinists the world over, was no less uncompromising...

...base, won over, no doubt, by the smiley staff and best damn pie around. Petsi pie is the only pie around, as far as I am concerned. I went first on a Thursday afternoon and found it suffused with the genial hum of satisfied customers. Think the coziness of Darwin??s with a bit of the mismatched, worn-in charm of Charlie’s Kitchen, but without the seating problems of either. We then confront the challenging question of how we make inferences about the biology of extinct organisms, which centers on how we make inferences about the past (also relevant to the humanities). Along the way, students learn much about dinosaurs, biomechanics, and key concepts such...

Generally speaking, socially successful people have better access to limited resources, both economic and otherwise. Successfully competing for these social resources often requires education, mobility, flexibility, and time; unfortunately, all of these elements become much more inaccessible after the birth of a care-intensive child. Viewed through Darwin??s prism, abortion can be seen as a tool that women use to increase their survivability, their ability to compete for limited resources, and even their ability to have greater future reproductive success. After all, if a pregnant woman does not have the economic or social resources to care...
