...substance and style are disappointing. Temple is more memorable for its enjoyable story of three marriages than for its message about religion, which is, I think, what an author of the caliber of Walker wanted to convey. Pop style and deep ideas just do not mix in any effective way. As a quick read the book is quite good, but Walker fails to present a moving story...

...even a real beginning? In theory, this broad-brush budget outline would comply with the Gramm-Rudman statutory requirement by reducing the deficit to $108 billion in 1990. A more realistic estimate puts the budgetary red ink at close to $130 billion. But numbers cannot convey the political timidity of the President and Congress in stubbornly holding the line against a tax hike, protecting most entitlements and refusing to make more than token trims in domestic and defense outlays. The Rose Garden agreement, in short, has spawned a Sixteen Tons budget that, to paraphrase the 1950s Tennessee Ernie Ford...

...most sensitive question is how to portray Jesus Christ. Some tribes show him with a huge head to symbolize great wisdom or a massive chest to convey strength. But should he be depicted as an African? Urban Christians are more open to this than believers in the bush. Commissioned by the Catholic Cathedral in Kananga, Zaire, Enkobo Mpane created his first Bantu Christ from ebony in 1969. Parishioners rejected the work, so it hangs in a nearby convent. "Our parishioners still think of Christ as a Jew and not an African," reports Arley Brown, a U.S. Baptist teaching in Kinshasa...

...possible that what the Tower commission dryly termed Reagan's "management style" permitted subordinates to convey his approval of plans of which he was unaware. Or by 1987 Reagan may have forgotten acts taken to help the contras in 1985, even though his fight with Congress over the issue had been a searing one. As the North trial focuses increasingly on Reagan's role in the scandal, it seems likely the ex-President will be called to testify. If Reagan breaks historical precedent by doing so, the clash between his past public statements and Oliver North's basic defense could...

Berkoff manages to convey the essence of the dilemma for Gregor's parents and sister, albeit without the least sympathy for their natural anxiety and revulsion. He is far more interested in portraying them as grasping and money mad, in a Marxist gloss on the plight of the worker. They are so coarse and reprehensible -- more animalistic when eating than the bug in the back bedroom , -- that there is no point of connection for the audience, certainly no creative tension between expecting the family to take a noble course and knowing why it succumbs to a selfish...
