Books and lyrics were the work of Jay Cavior while Victor Ziskin composed the music. The two gentlemen have splashed their considerable talent all over On the Rocks and time and time again the result is sparkling. A few of the lyrics are unexciting and some of the music is dull, but these are the exceptions as the audience is always tapping, sometimes humming, occasionally clapping in beat with the kick line, and once joined in for the chorus of a calypso number...
...Victor Ziskin '59 played his On the Border of Israel, which is in reality a piano sonata in three movements, entitled "Birth," "Recollection," and "Work." Ziskin showed a definite flair for idiomatic piano virtuosity, but drew too heavily on Prokofiev, Rachmaninoff and Ravel. The connection with Israel seemed rather tenuous, except for a few Jewish turns of melody, particularly in the exciting first movement. The second movement fell into a cocktail-lounge style, with slithering parallel chords in the left hand repeated ad nauseam. The finale was almost wholly a piece of Leonard Bernstein jazz, and relied too much...
...music for Love Rides the Rails by Varick Bacon and Victor Ziskin is uneven. Two show-stopping numbers, "Rag-Time Rosie" and "Friends" seem to redeem much of his material which generally lacks originality. Lyrics by Jay Cavior are quite clever. Choreographer Dolly Niggemeyer had little dancing talent to work with, but seems to have produced remarkable results--nothing fancy, but a varied and pleasing design. The outstanding freshness, which pervades throughout the production, may well have been stimulated by the originality of Webster Lithgow's truly inventive settings. Their informality and unobtrusiveness typifies a very relaxing and enjoyable production...
This would have seemingly made any freshman or female ineligible to help the Pudding. But Watson ruled that the actual writing of the music was independent of the "production of the show." He did specify, however, that Ziskin could not help in either arranging or in handling the music production...
Bacon and Tyler's original show, "The Golden Fleecer," was found unacceptable to the Pudding in the fall. Ziskin was asked to write new music, but it was not known until yesterday whether the Administration would permit his participation. He has studied under Leonard Bernstein, Roger Sessions, and Kay Swift...
