...lacy pattern of little round balls in the background of this week's cover is from a deoxyribo-nucleic-acid molecule model built at Manhattan's Sloan-Kettering Institute. The grey balls represent carbon atoms; blue is phosphorous; yellow is nitrogen; red is oxygen; white is hydrogen. Molecules do not look like this, of course. The atoms in them are much too small to be seen, even with an electron microscope. Loosely fitted in this wooden frame were 38 manuscript notebooks in which the author of Walden had kept his monumental (nearly two million words) Journal, written in the course of 24 years. The box also offered a mystery. It concerned a missing notebook dating from Thoreau's 23rd year (1840), in which the strongest love interest of the Concord bachelor's life was supposedly blighted. Discovered some...

...shrewdness, bravery and romanticism of such escapades Nelson wore through life like his own elegant uniforms. He served as a ship's captain at 20, and soon earned his rank in an insane bit of primitive amphibious warfare in the West Indies. (Yellow Jack killed most of his comrades.) He lost the sight of his right eye as a result of a wound suffered during the siege of Calvi on Corsica, and his arm storming the fortified town of Tenerife with a force of sailors in longboats...
